Job Description:

This position provides accurate, knowledgeable, and timely legal advice to the University on general healthcare matters, primarily to The University of Toledo Medical Center; clinics and major affiliates; and the Health Science Colleges of the University for issues regarding hospital operations, medical staff members, students and faculty of the Health Science Colleges, research, and graduate medical education residents.
This position also provides administrative direction to the Clinical Risk Manager with an overall goal to protect the financial assets of the University. The job duties include, but are not limited to, providing advice on transactional and contractual arrangements including provider insurance and employee health agreements and drafting and revising University bylaws, policies, and procedures.
The position maintains the professional qualifications for appointment as Assistant Attorney General of the state of Ohio; provides general legal counsel and advice as set forth by law and in accord with the professional standards established by the Ohio Attorney General, and in accord with the Ohio Code of Professional Conduct and Responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/experience/licensing:
• Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA accredited law school
• Knowledge of healthcare law, especially compliance and regulatory issues
• Knowledge of risk and insurance principles and of the Ohio Revised Code, as it applies to state institutions
• License to practice law in Ohio and in good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court, or ability to become licensed within one year of date of hire
• At least five (5) years of experience in the areas described above
• Experience working as legal counsel for a hospital either as in-house or as outside counsel
• Maintain appointment as an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Ohio

• Strong academic background
• Accuracy and attention to detail
• Skill in use of computers and related software applications

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least seven years of experience practicing in a broad range of legal areas, such as those listed above
• At least seven years of experience in healthcare law
• Experience serving as legal counsel in a higher education or public sector setting is desirable but not essential
• Broad knowledge of the University of Toledo and The University of Toledo Medical Center operations and a strong appreciation for the interaction of its constituencies
