Starting Salary Range: $55,259 – $63,486, commensurate with experience

Summary
The Research & Writing Librarian provides high-quality research, information, and instructional support to students, faculty, and staff within the medical university. This position is shared equally between the University Library (0.5 FTE) and the Writing Center (0.5 FTE), creating a unified, interdisciplinary approach to evidence-based research, information literacy, and scientific writing. The librarian collaborates closely with writing specialists, clinical faculty, instructional designers, and researchers to promote student success and strengthen scholarly and clinical communication skills across the institution.
Principal Functional Responsibilities
Library Responsibilities (0.5 FTE)
Research and Reference Services: Provide in-person and virtual reference support focused on evidence-based medicine, systematic searching, citation management, and biomedical information resources. Conduct advanced literature searches to support student projects, faculty research, quality improvement initiatives, and grant development.
Instruction and Curriculum Integration: Develop and deliver instruction sessions on database searching, research methodologies, information literacy, and scholarly communication. Collaborate with faculty to embed research skills into medical, nursing, and health sciences curricula.
Collection Development and Resource Management: Assist in evaluating and selecting biomedical databases, journals, and reference materials. Maintain research guides, tutorials, and online learning materials that support student and faculty research needs.
Scholarly Communication and Research Support Provide instruction on citation management tools, data management principles, and publishing options. Promote responsible use of generative AI tools in research and academic writing.
Writing Center Responsibilities (0.5 FTE)
Writing Support and Consultations: Offer individual and group consultations to students and faculty, focusing on scientific writing, research integration, argumentation, clarity, and adherence to publication or disciplinary style (AMA, APA, etc.). Provide tailored support for theses, capstones, manuscripts, posters, and presentations.
Workshops and Programming: Develop and co-lead workshops on literature reviews, integrating sources, academic integrity, manuscript preparation, and the responsible use of AI in writing. Collaborate with Writing Center staff to scaffold writing support across academic programs.
Resource Development: Create handouts, guides, templates, and online resources that bridge research skills with scientific writing. Enhance Writing Center content related to citation practices, research integration, and scholarly communication.
Cross-Unit Collaboration: Serve as a liaison between the Library and Writing Center to strengthen shared initiatives and streamline student support. Participate in committees and working groups that focus on assessment, student learning, and academic success.
Miscellaneous Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (ALA-accredited) or equivalent.
  • Experience providing reference and instructional services, preferably in a health sciences or academic library.
  • Strong knowledge of biomedical databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane Library).
  • Demonstrated ability to support academic or scientific writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a Writing Center or providing writing instruction.
  • Familiarity with AMA, APA, and other scientific writing styles.
  • Experience integrating research and writing instruction into curricula.
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication trends, including open access and AI-informed research tools.
  • Background in health sciences or related fields.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize a phone, computer and other office equipment. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to support reference services, workshops, and student needs.
