Position Summary Information
Summary
Manages the University Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety programs with emphasis on radiation safety and protection in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Interfaces with the campus community to respond to health and safety concerns or emergencies and to promote and ensure compliance. High level decision maker.
Principal Functional Responsibilities
Radiation Safety and Affiliated Programs: Serve as University Radiation Safety Officer and IRRP manage the daily operations of the affiliated programs under the direction of Assistant Director, EOHS, Campus Operations. Review protocols using radioactive materials or radiation generating equipment. Serve on University Radiation Safety Committee as an ex officio member. Conduct contamination monitoring (wipe tests) and meter survey monitoring. Evaluate proposals from PI’s who wish to use radioactive materials (Kuali research portal). Act as point of contact for regulatory inspections with ODH/NRC. Evaluate radiation protection and manage university badge monitoring program. Coordinate with contracted health physicist on annual calibrations of all equipment.
Occupational Health Program Management: Manages the day-to-day operations of the Occupational Health program inclusive of: addressing health and safety concerns as communicated by the campus community and outside contractors, OSHA 300 compliance, accident investigation, and nuisance complaints. Manage daily operations for the Hazardous Materials and Waste programs inclusive of handling, storage, inventory and disposal of campus hazardous materials and waste. Provide emergency response as required under affiliated safety programs.
Infectious Waste Programs: Assist the daily operations of the Infectious Waste and Sharps and Bloodborne Pathogen Programs, including training, control transportation of materials and waste pick-up, and any necessary documentation. Act as Emergency Response Coordinator.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with environmental and occupational regulations via periodic audits, hazard assessments and safety training.
Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with additional training in safety, occupational health and/ or industrial hygiene.
  • Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible experience in managing environmental and/or occupational health and safety programs.
Training: Must have the ability to complete radiation safety training within 180 days of hire sufficient to become accepted as RSO on the ODH Radiation Safety Isotope license. Must have or be able to achieve HazWoper certification (40 hours) within 120 days of hire; Proper OSHA training. Laser safety and DOT certification required.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or safety certification (ASP/ CSP)
Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize applicable tools and equipment necessary for the job, as well as basic office equipment. Potential exposure to chemical, biological and radiological hazards. Must be able to wear a respirator. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.

Starting Pay Rate Range: $52,087 – $61,637, commensurate with experience
