Position Summary Information
Summary
Manage day-to-day operations of the animal facility assuring compliance with applicable institutional policies and external regulatory and policy requirements, and supervising animal care staff. Coordinate and provide training in facility utilization, research animal techniques, and laboratory animal care. Oversees facility repairs, maintenance, and quality assurance monitoring.

Starting Salary Range: $41,156 – $48,701

Principal Functional Responsibilities
1) Supervise animal care staff; direct activities and ensures all task are completed. Conduct performance evaluations and assures adequate performance; Recruit, interview and hire staff.
2) Under the direction of the Assistant Director and Director, provides input for CMU policy development. Maintains and updates Standard Operating Procedures. Coordinates and provides training in facility utilization.
3) Monitor and order supplies of chemicals, feed, disposable garb, and other supplies needed for the day-to-day operations.
4) Coordinates and assist with animals-based research projects. Evaluation of CMU staff’s knowledge, skills and availability to assist in research projects.
5) Oversees facility repairs, maintenance, and quality assurance monitoring. Assist with trouble shooting and making decisions in addressing equipment problems. Schedules preventative maintenance visits with respective vendors according to service agreements. Maintains records.
6) Assist with animal husbandry as needed.
7) Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Degrees: Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; minimum AALAS Technician Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Level, or a degree in Veterinary Technology, or eligibility for LATG certification. Candidates without LATG certification will be expected to achieve it within 2 years of hire.
Experience: Minimum of five years of animal care experience (more may be required depending upon education level) and three years of leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications
Additional experience in surgery, anesthesia, and research animal techniques is desirable.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize applicable equipment necessary for the job, as well as basic office equipment. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, sit; talk; and hear. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
