As a senior counsel - employment law in our in-house legal team, you’ll provide counsel to Progressive related to all areas of employment and labor law. This includes, but is not limited to, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA); the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA); the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA); the Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA); and analogous and additional state and local laws (including laws governing leave of absence and anti-discrimination). This is a visible role in a highly regarded function with daily opportunities to be a strategic, hands-on legal partner to Progressive’s Human Resources (HR) and business operations.

This is a remote position with occasional travel. Proximity to Mayfield Village, Ohio is a plus, but not required. Must be willing to work eastern standard business hours.

Must-have qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Active license to practice law in at least one state; Active or Corporate license in state where working
  • Minimum five years of legal experience/training

Preferred skills

  • Experience leveraging legal expertise and risk assessment capabilities to provide counsel to leaders relating to employee relations matters, including performance management, discipline, work environment, employee investigations, workplace policies, and compliance with all applicable employment laws
  • Proven experience directing outside counsel and managing employment-related litigation, including class/collective actions and single-plaintiff matters, and representing Progressive in EEOC and other federal and state administrative proceedings, including preparing position statements and attending mediations
  • Ability to design and deliver legal training and education to HR and business unit managers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify and effectively communicate complex legal issues to business line stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage competing priorities, assess legal risks, handle sensitive information with discretion, remain composed under stressful situations, and balance legal and operational goals to provide tailored counsel

Compensation

  • $135,000 - $156,100/year
  • Gainshare bonus up to 40% of your eligible earnings based on company performance
  • Participation in our restricted stock units plan
