POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD) exists to develop and translate cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies to increase accuracy in clinical decision making, improve patient outcomes, and enable novel discoveries in disease biology.

The Assistant Director of Research Programs is a key member of the center, while supporting the center’s leadership team and will be responsible for coordinating the research efforts of the center in applying novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to radiology and pathology imaging towards disease detection, diagnosis, predicting outcome and treatment response assessment. The Assistant Director will work directly with the faculty co-directors and synchronize research efforts of the post-docs and graduate researchers. The Assistant Director supports the needs of the research team, organizes resources and timelines for optimum workflow. This position will act as a direct liaison between the faculty co-directors and external collaborators and will be in charge of monitoring project progress. The Assistant Director will also be the point person for intellectual property applications, invention disclosures institutional research collaboration agreements, procurement, and also helping in coordinating large, multi-PI, grant proposals. The center, which has grown to encompass over 30 people, has garnered 15M in federal funding, and is aggressively pursuing grant funding and research collaboration with over 10 national and international centers; now intends to continue expanding into new disease sites and the research team in the coming years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1.   Must be acutely aware of the center’s research projects and the research goals and have a general understanding of the center’s work in imaging, pathology, radiology and others. Provide oversight including coordination of protocol development, as well as project tracking, review activation and reporting. Review and revise standard operating procedures to ensure they are consistent; identify and address inconsistencies in policies and procedures; facilitate consistent reporting and documentation; maintain consistent code and data management. Provide education and training of research staff related to lab operations. (20%)
    
  2.   Serve as a technical resource and advisor on research operations and compliance issues. Serve as the liaison between the faculty co-directors and collaborators, ensuring timely communications and deliverables. Define and manage research project goals, including establishment of milestones and deliverables and coordination of project developments for optimum workflow. (15%)
    
  3.   Take a lead role in organizing and supporting the research team’s grant application efforts and research milestones. Assist in the development of multi-PI, multi-component, multi-site collaborative grant proposals. (15%)
    
  4.   Help identify and develop a process to implement research resources and business intelligence tools (hardware and software).  Will be responsible for assessing project/data management and communication products, and coordinating implementation, training and development. Streamline operations and coordinate resources that incorporate the scientific vision, strategic goals and objectives. Ensure that the appropriately compliant structure is in place and functioning effectively. Perform analyses of operational systems to develop new or improved systems and operating procedures to achieve maximum effectiveness and efficiency of research resources. (10%)
    

Qualifications

  1.   Serve as primary liaison and establish and maintain appropriate systems for managing intellectual property applications, invention disclosures and institutional research collaboration agreements. (10%)
    
  2.   Inform prioritization and synchronize research efforts of post-doctoral research associates and graduate researchers to ensure available resources, successful outcomes and on-time completion. Work closely with the faculty co-directors, support the management of potential compliance issues involving research, coordinating with institutional leadership and external agencies as appropriate. (10%)
    
  3.   Serve as primary liaison between the center and external collaborators at clinical, industry and pharmaceutical companies, as well as disease specific cooperative groups. Play a central role in facilitating the acquisition of physical pathology slides, radiographic scans and digitized image files from collaborating clinical centers, and lead efforts for de-identification and modality determination. (10%)
    
  4.   Develop mechanisms to effectively manage and track the center’s extensive research portfolio. Develop regular reports for university leadership, funding agencies, and fundraising efforts. (7%)
    

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1.   Regularly maintain the center’s website and communicate the center’s research activities, publications and successes to relevant internal University and school marketing teams and outlets as well as via social media channels and/or partners to support effective marketing and communications for the center. (2%)
    
  2.   Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)
    

CONTACTS

Department: Continuous (daily) interaction with the faculty co-directors, research staff, grants management and administrative staff and other team members for the management of the center’s research portfolio.

University: Occasional to frequent interaction with other departments to facilitate center research needs.

External: Regular to frequent contact with local collaborators at University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and with a growing number of collaborating institutions, nationally and internationally, to manage research projects and goals.

Students: Occasional to frequent contact with undergraduate and graduate student researchers within the center.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible for coordinating the efforts of research faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 years of experience managing projects in a medical research-related field, preferably in an research/academic setting. Experience with project management is a plus.

Education/Licensing: MS, PhD, MD, or other terminal degree in engineering/medical sciences.

Ability to learn new programs as necessary to support research operations.
    
  4.   Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with leadership, the research team and external collaborators across functions, levels and departments toward shared objectives.
    
  5.   Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    
  6.   Demonstrated ability working with a team in a medical field is preferred.
    
  7.   Strong organizational skills in planning, organizing, prioritizing and managing multiple, diverse projects.
    
  8.   Resourceful team player with a positive attitude, global mindset and intercultural openness, and ability to cooperate and navigate in virtual settings.

  15. Familiarity with computing environments preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions are typical of an office environment and computer rooms. There will be little to no exposure to hazards. The work requires negligible physical exertion, however, limited manual dexterity is required.
